It’s hard to believe there’s very many more entertaining players in the NBA than Jose Calderon of the Toronto Raptors.

Sure, there are others, perhaps, but Calderon ranks with the best of them.

Against the Detroit Pistons on Wednesday, for instance, Calderon had a staggering 17 assists in a 97-91 Toronto win.

“I don’t know why you guys are surprised; you guys have watched this guy for eight years,” said Detroit coach Lawrence Frank. “I mean this guy is a damn good player, think about his international experience playing for Spain, seen him in playoff performances. He’s got great moxie. The guy had 17 assists. Calderon just over time of having been in the division with him for a number of years, I’ve always had a great deal of respect for him, he’s a super competitor and has just great moxy. He really plays at a great pace.”

Face it, with  26 assists on 35 made baskets, this team knows how to move, and how to share the basketball.

“Jose (Calderon) is our quarterback, he’s our Peyton Manning. He sees everything,” said Raptors coach Dwayne Casey.

Demar Derozan agrees that it’s foolish for anyone to be surprised the way Calderon controls the floor.
“I’ve been playing with him for four years and until he gets forty assists, then he’ll surprise me, but it’s not surprising,” Derozan said. “He knows how to find guys in their sweet spots and he gets guys going.”

The Raptors had only six turnovers against Detroit.

“When you are playing with more confidence you know where your teammates are,” he  said. “You just try to make that extra pass if it’s there and if not it’s better to take a shot because we have a chance for a rebound instead of a turnover.”

Calderon had nine assists Friday in a 93-90 win over the Orlando Magic.
