The story of Brandon Roy is turning into a sad one in the end. It appears Roy is going to have to retire for a second time due to his chronic knee problems. It is a real shame because Roy showed so much promise when he broke into the National Basketball Association.
When Roy opened his career, I really thought he would be a player that could go to multiple All-Star Games and would help the Portland Trail Blazers become a team to reckon with in the Western Conference. Portland never made an NBA Finals with Roy on the team and still appears to be years off while Roy did made three All-Star teams. Roy came back with the Minnesota Timberwolves this season and I believed that the time off would allow Roy to get back to his normal playing ways. Roy has played in just five games, averaging less than six points a game and hasn’t played in three weeks.
Roy has said in the past couple days that he is going to keep trying to play but I don’t envision how bad the pain must be with his knees. It is just a drive and desire of a player who really wants his career not to end at such an early age but I fear it is about to. I hope for the best for Roy and hope that if he decides to continue playing, it won’t affect him too terribly for the rest of his life. It isn’t worth a lifetime of pain and suffering just to have another year of playing in the big show.
