Detroit Pistons Might Be Interested in Scott Skiles As Next Coach
Scott Skiles might make a perfect fit as the next coach of the Detroit Pistons.
Lawrence Frank doesn’t seem to be on track right now to take the Pistons to the playoffs which might be the only way he sends his tenure into a third season at Detroit.
Team president Joe Dumars isn’t shy about firing coaches that don’t deliver what he expects after two seasons. While the jury is still out on Frank, who could save his job with a strong second half, it’s likely Dumars will be attracted to Skiles for several reasons.
At the top of the list is the fact Skiles played at Michigan State and remains a popular name among Michigan sports fans. His mere presence could bring vitality and excitement, if ever so briefly, to a franchise that is struggling in a major way at the box office. The Pistons’ home attendance has taken a beating in past years as the team has endured some of the league’s worst records.
Frank seems more popular with his players than his predecessor, John Kuester, but lost some credibility with a 9-22 start although they’ve had a recent 4-1 run and are 13-23. Players like Tayshaun Prince have questioned Franks’ lineup decisions at times.
Skiles has head coaching experience and knows the Eastern Conference very well. He’s likely to be received very well by a young team that appreciates Skiles’ NBA background.
If the Pistons have a strong second half, and make the playoffs, or at least come close, Frank should be safe.
But don’t be surprised if Dumars has Skiles’ phone number memorized by now.
