Miami Heat Re-Sign Josh Harrellson to a Ten-Day Contract

 

Well, that was fast.

The Miami Heat filled up their lone remaining roster spot by bringing back the very player the team waived to create it. The team re-signed Josh Harrellson to a ten-day contract on Wednesday, two days after waiving him. Miami plans to make the signing official today.

Harrellson was able to make the Heat roster after training camp due to his niche of being a big man who can shoot from beyond the arc. Unfortunately he was not able to crack into the rotation due to Chris Bosh shooting three-point shots and the rest of his game making him a project. He spent most of this NBA season in the inactive list, but the Heat’s rebounding issues caused Heat head coach Erik Spoelstra to make one last attempt at implementing Harrellson into the lineup during Miami’s New Years Eve overtime victory over the Orlando Magic. Harrellson was put into the game twice, once at the five and once at the four, but didn’t show enough to warrant guaranteeing his contract.

The Heat may be using this signing to give more time for free agent center Chris Andersen to get into playing shape. Andersen worked out for the Heat in Miami but didn’t show enough to have team president Pat Riley offer a contract. As of Wednesday Andersen was still reported to being in Miami, leaving the window open for the Heat to give him another look after Harrellson’s contract expires. The Heat could also be waiting for other teams to buy out contracts of seldom used big men. Either scenario is still probable should Miami offer Harrellson another ten-day deal.

The NBA rules stipulate that a team could sign a player twice to a ten-day contract before deciding to have that player on the roster for the remainder of the season.
