The Boston Celtics acquired Courtney Lee over the off-season with the idea that he would be a big contributor on a team with serious championship aspirations. It certainly has not gone exactly according to plan, but he has been improving as of late and as a result helps the Celtics in two departments.
The Celtics have been mentioned as a team that could be very active come the trading deadline in February and one guy they figure to make available is Lee. With the return of Avery Bradley, the team has an abundance of guard options and does have the ability to move one if it means upgrading the roster, and in particular, the front court. Leandro Barbosa could very easily fill Lee’s minutes as it would not appear that the team would move Bradley or Jason Terry. The team would most likely prefer to deal Terry first, but he has factors going against him including his age and contract. If the Celtics could move Lee as part of a package for say Marcin Gortat of the Phoenix Suns, GM Danny Ainge would be hard pressed to not do the deal.
However, it doesn’t hurt to have a guy like Lee on the roster if he isn’t moved. He is certainly a solid player and does play good defense, a trait the team obviously values immensely. He has been playing much better recently and could provide more than capable minutes in a reserve role.
Courtney Lee has been much better as of late and it will be interesting to see what the Celtics do with him as the trading deadline creeps closer.
