When Will Derrick Rose’s Injuries Become a Problem for Chicago Bulls?

David Banks-USA TODAY Sports

Derrick Rose is the face of the Chicago Bulls, which is something that fans in the Windy City believe won’t change for a long, long time. However, that change could come sooner rather than later if Rose can’t stay on the court.

Rose is still recovering from a torn ACL that capped off a 2011 season which he virtually missed entirely due to a slew of injuries, including a bruised elbow, sprained toe, back spasms, sprained ankle and a handful of other bumps and bruises. He’s expected back in late February, but with his luck, he’ll get tripped by a sideline waitress in his first game back.

All jokes aside, the 2011 season was a very unfortunate one for Rose, but what if it becomes common? What if he sprains a toe, elbow, ankle knee and/or finger in every other game once he returns from the ACL tear? What if he’s never the same after this latest devastating injury?

That’s something that hasn’t crossed the minds of Bulls fans, players, coaches and executives yet, but it will if Rose misses any large portion of 2013. Chicago is paying the league’s youngest player ever to win the MVP award a fortune because he’s a superb athlete and the heart and soul of this Bulls team. However, he can’t help them from the sideline.

Other athletes’ tenures with certain teams have been cut short due to injury, so it’s not like this is an outrageous random thought. The Bulls are a team on the verge of contending, but that hinges solely and entirely on Rose begin on the floor. If he has to make yet another “return” in the current calendar year, he could become a liability for the Bulls instead of an asset.
