Boston Celtics head coach Doc Rivers reportedly ripped into his team yesterday, threatening them that if they do not start playing better, major personnel decisions will be made. The Celtics lost again last night, this time in a blowout loss at the Detroit Pistons. It is the second time the team has been blown out in Detroit this season.
For some reason, the Celtics simply do not play well in their gym. It doesn’t make sense, but here we are.
Back to Rivers – he is usually so calm and even-keeled, it is somewhat surprising that he made his actions public. He usually is the type of coach who doesn’t like to get the media involved. Either way, he is absolutely correct. This team is close to hitting the point where changes need to be made, even perhaps starting with Rajon Rondo and Paul Pierce. That doesn’t mean the Celtics should trade them for the sake of trading them – something that should only be done if there is a golden offer out there.
But when it comes to Courtney Lee and others, anyone should be free game. The problem with a majority of the current roster is that they are under contracts that are not very friendly for opposing teams to pick up.
It was good to see Rivers show some fire when discussing his current team. After winning seven in a row, they are right back where they started previously. They are back in a team-wide funk, and everyone seems to be playing poorly. This team needs to start playing better, or GM Danny Ainge will have no choice but to start making changes.
