The Orlando Magic were expected to be in a rebuilding year and even though playoffs seem like a longshot at this point–the team has to be pleased with the development of center Nikola Vucevic.
The center has basically been a double-double machine over the last couple of weeks as he’s averaging 11.6 points per game to go along with 11.1 rebounds per game. There were plenty of questions surrounding Orlando and whether they made the right move by shipping Dwight Howard off to the Los Angeles Lakers, but it’s safe to say the team is doing just fine with Vucevic in his place.
Despite their 14-26 record, the Magic are only six games out of the final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference and there’s still plenty of time for them to turn their season around to get back in the hunt. It may sound crazy, but this team may have a bright future in Vucevic and from a fantasy basketball perspective–the center may end up being one of the biggest steals of the year.
It’s safe to say not many fantasy owners believed Vucevic was worthy of an early pick in most leagues, but now that he’s become a double-double machine this season–he most likely didn’t last on waivers very long with the type of numbers he was displaying each night. Who knows, with the way things are playing out in Orlando–Vucevic could end up becoming more valuable of a player than Howard ever was in Orlando.
Of course, Vucevic is still far away from even becoming close to Howard’s level–so there’s no reason to make any assumptions just yet.
