The Boston Celtics continue to be linked to current Memphis Grizzlies forward Rudy Gay and the rumors do not make a ton of sense on the Celtics end if it involves Paul Pierce. Gay is a really nice player and does a lot of really good things, but he is terribly overpaid and not good enough to warrant the remaining dollar figures he is due in his current contract.
If Gay was signed to a more friendly deal, then the Celtics would make for a much better fit. However, if he was signed to a better deal, the Grizzlies would more than likely not have any incentive to deal him, and if they did, they would probably ask for the moon in return. Any Gay deal now is motivated by the fact that they want to cut money from their cap so that they can maintain at least some part of their current core roster.
Gay would be a great fit for the Celtics and would allow the team to get younger while still being somewhat competitive. The problem with them obtaining Gay is that he would clog a lot of their future payroll and would make it hard for the team to rebuild with him taking up so much cap space. He is being paid like a top ten NBA player, which is hard to justify. You have to credit Gay’s agent for absolutely screwing the Grizzlies franchise, though. That is why the agents get the big bucks and this was just a classic example of a team getting robbed.
Rudy Gay is a fit for the Celtics, but not on his current contract.
