There are often special bonds between professional athletes in different sports, but no one could have guessed any such connection existed between Baltimore Ravens quarterback Joe Flacco and Dallas Mavericks forward Dirk Nowitzki. In fact, Nowitzki is taking credit for Flacco’s record-breaking performance in the 2013 NFL playoffs, which included winning the Super Bowl MVP award. Nowitzki says the fact he has an autographed Flacco jersey in his NBA locker caused the Ravens’ signal-caller to get hot at the right time and stay hot through his title run.

Ravens linebacker Ray Lewis, who will retire now that the season is over, has a special bond with U.S. Olympic swimmer Michael Phelps, but the two talk frequently. Nowitzki and Flacco are just fans of one another who exchanged autographed jerseys after the Ravens beat the Denver Broncos in the divisional round of the AFC playoffs. Nowitzki said that was a test for Flacco to “see if he [was] for real or not.”

Flacco is definitely for real. In fact, his agent thinks he should be the highest-paid quarterback in the NFL. Nowitzki got his big pay day right before winning his first ring, but Flacco already has the hardware, so one can only assume he’ll soon be rolling in the dough as well since his contract expires this offseason. Maybe Nowitzki will take the Mavericks on another magical title run next year while Flacco has the German star’s jersey in his locker. It’s a fun thought, but don’t hold your breath, Dallas fans.
