The Minnesota Timberwolves received some great news on Friday and no it doesn’t involve Kevin Love‘s rehab schedule.

In fact it is Nikola Pekovic coming flat out and saying:

“First of all, I like the team. I think we can do a lot when we’re healthy. I like the coaching staff.”

This is the time for the Wolves to strike on the team’s best player this season. Too often this team has stood idly by and watched its stars simply get too big for Minnesota and move elsewhere. With Love possibly reaching a Kevin Garnett level of frustration re-signing Pekovic would make all parties happy.

A core of Ricky Rubio, Love and Pekovic has to strike fear into any Western Conference team looking to compete in recent seasons as none of these stars are over the age of 27.

Re-signing Pekovic on production alone makes sense as the Montenegrin center is averaging 16.0 points and 8.7 rebounds per game in 2013. He has shown his durability battling the NBA‘s best centers on a nightly basis as well.

Then there are the logistics of the move which is bringing in a front court force that will be compatible with Love for seasons to come. Love is the face of the franchise at 24-years-old and have been on record saying he’s unsure about the direction of the Timberwolves–this move would show the team’s commitment to winning.

In my mind this move will decide the Wolves fate for years to come and if in fact they let one of the most productive centers in the league go it will send a message to the entire NBA and the team itself.

Pekovic will be a restricted free agent entering the Summer of 2013.
