Debby Wong-US PRESSWIRE

The NBA trade deadline is approaching and of course the rumors are starting to fly fast and furious. One of the interesting rumors out there is that the Brooklyn Nets are in dialogue with the Charlotte Bobcats about acquiring Ben Gordon in exchange for Kris Humphries. Personally I very much like the idea of the Nets looking for a scorer to help out their bench (especially a shooter who has experience as a bench contributor). I wrote an article recently on the Nets second quarter (and often third quarter) struggles so adding an aggressive scorer off the bench is what the doctor ordered for P.J. Carlesimo (article on Nets 2nd Q struggles is HERE)

MarShon Brooks was supposed to be the guard off the bench to lead the second unit but he has taken a step back from his promising rookie campaign from last season. Brooks’ production is down across the board as he is producing less than half as well as he did last season. C.J. Watson has been decent at best off the Nets bench so I understand the desire to add a legit scoring guard that can produce off of Carlesimo’s bench.

Humphries was averaging a double-double as a Net, but his play seems to have regressed this season and his minutes can be taken by Reggie Evans and Andray Blatche. If Mirza Teletovic was playing better I would think that trading Humphries is a slam dunk, but it does look like he is their most likely trade chip.

The Nets are a top-5 defensive team so they could stand to make a trade that takes away a bit from their great team defense (teams shoot extremely well vs them but the Nets do enough on D to limit the amount of shots and that keep their opponents scoring way down). The Nets struggle with bench scoring, and they struggle overall getting easy baskets by setting each other up with solid assists so if they do make a trade it will surely be to address those issues. The Nets just re-upped with Humphries on a two year $24 million deal, but it does seem like he is a tradeable asset that could soon be on the move.
