The Boston Celtics have roster openings and it is somewhat surprising that they have not made an attempt to sign free agent guard Delonte West. Celtics fans are obviously very familiar with West as he was originally drafted by the organization some time ago. He has made two stints with the team and a third one might be beneficial as they could use another ball handler in the backcourt. With Rajon Rondo’s season ending ACL injury, it makes sense to add depth but with the recent play of Leandro Barbosa, the Celtics can be picky with how they use extra roster spots.
Can West help the team out? It remains to be seen. He is a solid player but it has to be troubling for him that no one has signed him yet after four months of professional basketball this season. With Barbosa around, even if he signed with the Celtics, his playing time would be minimal at best.
One of the main problems that has plagued him his whole career is immaturity. He is constantly making questionable comments and uses social media in an uncertain manner. None of that has anything to do with his abilities on the basketball court but the Celtics do not want to disrupt the chemistry they have going for them at this current juncture. They are playing arguably their best basketball of the season without Rondo and GM Danny Ainge still has the trading deadline to analyze his roster and see what moves need to be made. West could still be signed after the deadline, but that is no guarantee.
