Kevin Love Returns to Practice, Can’t Rush Back From Injury

The Minnesota Timberwolves revolve around Kevin Love. Period. Ricky Rubio may be the second face of the franchise, but Love is what makes the team go and they won’t get any better until he’s 100 percent healthy. However, they’re about to make a mistake that could negatively affect the team for more than just this season.

Love returned to practice this past week after having a second surgery on his now twice broken shooting hand. He’s eyeing a March return although he still hasn’t been cleared for contact, but even that could be too soon. It would be one thing if the Timberwolves were fighting hard for a playoff spot and Love had only broken his shooting hand once this season, but neither of those things are true.

This season is lost for Minnesota. It was supposed to be the year the Timberwolves became Western Conference contenders, but it’s hard to do that when a team’s star player misses so much time and has a longer-than-expected adjustment period coming back from the first injury. Speaking of which, there’s no telling what Love might go through in coming back a second time.

The Timberwolves would be wise to just shut Love down for the season and start preparing next year right now. Love needs more than ample time to recover and get back to 100 percent health before trying to return and lead this team. If Minnesota brings him back too soon again, it could cost Love more than just the remainder of this already lost season.
