Boston Celtics guard Leandro Barbosa suffered what appeared to be a serious injury in the team’s loss Monday night against the Charlotte Bobcats. He came down funny on his leg, and those types of injuries never seem to turn out well. The immediate reaction is a torn ACL or MCL, but either way, it would appear Barbosa has a good chance of being shut down for the rest of the season.
This is terrible news for the Celtics franchise as he was starting to become more acclimated in the team’s rotation. He was originally signed as added depth in the backcourt, but he had been needed more recently with injuries to the team’s core rotation. It is a shame for Barbosa, as he was playing for a new contract as well. Now he will have to settle for a similar contract he signed with Boston this past off-season.
Without Barbosa, the Celtics are very short on guard depth. Their primary guards are Avery Bradley, Courtney Lee, and Jason Terry.
Jeff Green could probably slide over and help out a little bit, but that is not where he is most comfortable. We have recently written about the team possibly signing free agent Delonte West, and tonight’s news certainly makes that an even stronger possibility.
Either way, the trio above is going to have to step up and assume even greater responsibilities. Terry, in particular, needs to step up and take on more of a leadership role.
