Reports are surfacing that the Boston Celtics are interested in DeJuan Blair, a power forward/center for the San Antonio Spurs. Last season, Blair was in the starting lineup playing alongside Tim Duncan in the post. When San Antonio added Boris Diaw, Blair lost his starting job.
Coming off the bench is not necessarily a bad thing. Fellow teammate Manu Ginobili has been doing this for years. The reason why this is bad in Blair’s case centers around his productivity. In this current season, Blair is averaging 5.4 points and 3.9 rebounds in 13.8 minutes of playing time.
Possibly, the emergence of Kawhi Leonard and Tiago Splitter has affected Blair’s play. Even if this is the case, Blair is not the same player that he was in college. When he was the starting center for the Pittsburgh Panthers, Blair was dominant. At 6’7″, 250 pounds, he had to ability to intimidate players who were much taller than him. I recall when Pittsburgh was facing the Connecticut Huskies. Blair flipped the Connecticut’s center, Hasheem Thabeet, over his back.
Blair was relentless several years ago in college.
Boston may believe that Blair is being misused in San Antonio. I could see a trade for Fab Melo taking place; or possibly, Jared Sullinger (slim chances) and maybe Chris Wilcox. I would like to think that Blair still has the ability to wreck havoc on both ends of the court.
Prior to him entering the NBA, I viewed Blair as the second coming of Charles Barkley. Now, I’m not so sure. San Antonio might have their eyes set on a low-post player in preparation of Tim Duncan possibly retiring after this season.
