Los Angeles Lakers center Dwight Howard and shooting guard Kobe Bryant are far from being the close of friends and any shot of the two growing on each other has officially gone out the window.
Howard reportedly decided it would be funny to imitate Kobe in the Western Conference locker room at the NBA All-Star game this past weekend. The following is an excerpt from the New York Post describing what happened:
We’re told that Howard “grabbed Kobe’s uniform, put it on, and imitated him in front of all the other players on the West team. He was joking and berating Kobe” to fellow NBA stars, including the Clippers’ Chris Paul and Blake Griffin and Oklahoma City Thunder star Kevin Durant. The source added Bryant later arrived in the locker room, “said hello to everyone on the team except Howard, grabbed his stuff and moved as far away from Howard as he could.”
I never knew Superman used kryptonite on himself, but that is definitely what happened. I am not sure if Howard is liked or not among the NBA ranks, but I am positive the respect for Bryant is overwhelming. For Howard to do something as silly as berate Kobe in front of his peers is beyond stupid, especially when Bryant’s close friends were the ones who witnessed the action.
Clearly, Howard was joking around with his West teammates, but considering the tension in the Lakers locker room appears to be boiling over, the last thing he should do is give the media more firepower. Bryant is not a fan of Howard and the fans in Los Angeles are at the point where they believe the team’s inability to win is directly resulted to Howard’s incompetence on the court. Yes, he is still putting up legitimate numbers this season, but he is definitely not connecting with his teammates and chemistry is everything in a game that only has five players on the court at once.
The fact that this is not the first time Howard has made fun of Bryant does not bode well for the Lakers’ chances this season.
