Remember last year, when we all said that LeBron James could not get better? That what he demonstrated on the basketball court was the very pinnacle of what an individual could reach? That he won practically everything an NBA player — or any other athlete for that matter — could ever wish for, making it practically impossible for him to further progress?

Well, he is somehow still getting better.

NBA regular season MVP, Finals MVP, Olympic gold medalist, Sport Illustrated’s Sportsman of the Year — the list of LeBron’s achievements in 2012 is dazzling and astounding. Last year was a make-or-break season for James and he did not disappoint. His efficiency was off the charts, as he was averaging career-highs in both field goal percentage and three-point percentage.

Somehow, the Miami Heat superstar has taken it to the next level this year, topping his numbers in the same categories yet again. He is shooting a staggering 56.3 percent from the field and over 40 percent from beyond the arc.

As LeBron obliterates everything in his path, respected figures around the league take notice. In an interview with Shaun Powell of Sports on Earth, NBA legend and 14-time All-Star Jerry West acknowledges just how good this highly proficient 28-year-old is:

I’ll say Lebron is in another world right now. He’s a player for the decade. You watch him and you can tell his teammates love him. What you can’t do is judge him by the championships right now. Just his all-around play and skills. He’s a superstar who’s very unselfish. You don’t find that too often. He could lead the league in scoring every year if he wanted. But he’d rather find any way to beat you even if it meant giving up the ball. To watch his growth as a player and person has been pretty special. I would have enjoyed having him as a teammate.

Mr. West could not have put it any better. Many compare LeBron to the likes of Michael Jordan, Kobe Bryant and other all-time greats, but the discussions are utterly pointless at this point. The fact that he is drawing the comparisons, while still having at least another five good years in him, is admirable in itself.

It is extremely rare to see a talent who is capable of breaking all logical boundaries of the sport enter the league. So instead of making these silly and premature comparisons, let’s enjoy witnessing James’ greatness, as he continues to write the next chapter in his legacy.
