Damian Lillard‘s stats keep going up for the Portland Trail Blazers and so do his chances of locking up the NBA Rookie of the Year award. Lillard took another step in that direction Tuesday night with a powerful game against a talented Memphis Grizzlies squad. Lillard is averaging 18.0 points, 3.2 rebounds and 6.4 assists per game.
Memphis pulled out a 102-97 victory against the Blazers. It was a tough loss for a Portland team trying to pursue an NBA playoff spot. It’s still not over and Portland remains in the playoff hunt, but this loss makes it tougher, especially since it came at home.
Still, Lillard showed with some of his incredible moves to the basket and what a professional superstar he has become. For the 29-34 Blazers, he netted 30 points with 8-of-17 shooting from the floor 3-of-5 in 3-pointers and 11-of-11 in free throws. He also had seven assists in a dazzling floor game.
In recent games, Lillard has been scoring 20 points or more and is playing some of his best basketball of the season. Unfortunately, he may not be able to showcase his talents in the playoffs unless his team gets hot in a hurry.
LaMarcus Aldridge had 28 points Tuesday, meaning that two Portland players combined for 58 of the team’s 97 points. While Lillard goes for the top rookie award and Aldridge continues to play well, other Blazers aren’t pitching in enough to help the team and it’s among the main reasons Portland will likely not advance to the playoffs unless the Blazers turn their fortunes around in a hurry.
