Maurice Harkless‘ rookie season with the Orlando Magic is rapidly coming to an end and the product from St. John’s probably considers it to be a disappointment of sorts. It hasn’t been a bad debut season for Harkless but it could probably be so much better in some respects.

Harkless needs to work on improving his intensity and aggressiveness on the court the next few games. He’s definitely going to have to pick it up in his sophomore NBA season and the Magic could have used it Tuesday night.

The Los Angeles Lakers, motivated by being in the thick of a hunt for a playoff spot and with the return of Dwight Howard to his former team in Florida, came to Orlando and posted a 106-97 victory. Harkless had one of his better games from recent weeks with 4-of-7 shooting in nearly 27 minutes of action plus 1-of-2 at the 3-point range.  He also fouled out, which fans don’t see too much of in the NBA nowadays.

But Harkless also had 12 points, well above his average, so it looks like he’s been picking up his pace rather nicely. He had scored on a combined seven points in his previous two games, but he had a strong game against the Miami Heat last week when the Magic lost a close one. Harkless had his focus together and was on fire by hitting 5-of-9 from the floor He also had three rebounds and three steals.

Just maintaining a steady number game-in and game-out will help Harkless immensely as he tries to elevate his play to the next level.
