Al Harrington just hasn’t missed a beat as an NBA performer.

It appeared Harrington wouldn’t play this season so he could recover from a staph infection. But then the Orlando Magic, after the trade deadline, discovered they needed a backup center. Harrington filled the bill.

Harrington is trying to regain the form that put him in 64 games for the Denver Nuggets last season, averaging 14.2 points, 6.1 rebounds and 4.14 assists per game, while shooting 44.6 percent from the floor. He had averaged double figures the past 11 seasons before coming to the Magic.

While Harrington hasn’t quite picked up those numbers in his brief appearances this season, he has still had some strong games while providing as much as 18 minutes in two outings.

Harrington, a 14-year NBA veteran, had 10 points in one of those games in a victory at the New Orleans Hornets when he was 4-of-7 from the floor, 2-of-3 in triples and grabbed five rebounds while adding three assists and two steals. He also had a commendable performance in 17 minutes of action against the Philadelphia 76ers in a 99-91 victory on Sunday with eight points and three assists.

Harrington isn’t totally healthy, but he’s getting there and might be able to regain his form from previous seasons. In 1998, he became the youngest rookie at age 18 in the NBA. He’s had a commendable career and he’s not done yet.

Overall, he’s averaging 5.7 points. 3.0 rebounds and 1.1 assists per game. But at age 33, Harrington can still contribute. He might turn out to be quite a bargain for the Magic.
