Another option for the Boston Celtics in this summer’s NBA Draft is Louisville Cardinals center Gorgui Dieng. He is an enormous presence in the paint and is very similar to Kansas Jayhwaks center Jeff Withey, who we profiled last week. Dieng would be a great shot blocking presence for the Celtics and is young enough that he can learn from Kevin Garnett before being thrown into the fire.
Dieng was a mystery recruit coming out of high school and Louisville was originally criticized for taking such a no-name player, especially from their fan base. The ultimate rule with this is that it is usually pretty stupid to go against Louisville head coach Rick Pitino. The guy can coach and clearly knows what he is doing. The guy is a national champion and has his team ready to compete for another championship this season.
As with Withey, the Celtics could use a guy like Dieng. He isn’t much of an offensive threat but he can sure play defense, which is obviously a trait that head coach Doc Rivers covets. Think about their current lineup this season, there is never one person who goes out there who isn’t focused on playing defense. Jordan Crawford is not known as a great defender, but he has been much better since joining the Celtics about a month ago.
Dieng can help the organization in the future and could perhaps take over when Garnett decides to retire. He would be similar to former Celtic Kendrick Perkins in that he wouldn’t provide much offense, but he would be solid defensively.
Gorgui Dieng is another name the Celtics could look at in June.
