Boston Celtics Draft Prospects: Adreian Payne
The Boston Celtics will target big men in the upcoming NBA Draft and one guy who has been rising up a ton of draft boards is Michigan State junior Adreian Payne. Payne is quite an enigma as he is so talented but often times disappears in games. He plays for an incredible coach in Tom Izzo and this year has been a great year for him compared to preseason expectations. He has improved greatly on his outside shot and now opponents have to guard him on the perimeter. What is great about his game is that now he can use a pump fake on his outside shot and use either hand to drive and attack the hoop. This was something he worked on last summer and it has been an excellent tool that he has been able to utilize. The outside shot has become a tremendous weapon for him and there are not many 6’11 big men who can play inside and outside like Payne. His game is rather similar to Toronto Raptors forward Andrea Bargnani in that he likes to stay on the perimeter and isn’t a tremendous rebounder. He is also rail thin and needs to add at least 15 pounds of muscle to his current frame.
The Celtics would do well in picking Payne if he is available when they make their choice. He is currently projected to go somewhere in the late first to early second round, but with strong pre-draft workouts, he could see his name rise before the draft. This is all contingent on if he decides to leave school early, which is no sure thing. The Celtics would seriously consider Payne if he is available when they make their pick this summer.
