In what has become a more complicated situation than initially anticipated, a part owner of the Golden State Warriors is now joining the fight to keep the Sacramento Kings in Northern California.
It seemed all but a certainty that the Kings would be sold and moved to Seattle for next season, but that plan appears to have met a serious challenge. Vivek Ranadive, a Silicon Valley software tycoon, is joining in on the bid for the Kings along with Mark Mastrov and Ron Burkle to keep the Kings right where they are.
The task is still a difficult one given that Sacramento still needs to get a new area approved before the deadline to pitch a proposal to NBA owners in two weeks. The group that was initially set to purchase the Kings with plans of moving them to Seattle had bid over $500 million to purchase the franchise from current owners the Maloof family.
The Kings have been in Sacramento since moving to the city from Kansas City in 1985. The franchise enjoyed success in the late 90’s and early 00’s and the Kings got marginal fan support at best, ranking around the middle of the league in attendance. But besides that the Kings haven’t been very good, and their attendance numbers have plummeted to the very bottom of the NBA in recent years.
From a business standpoint, the Kings franchise would probably be better off being sold and moved to the Northwest, where the market is bigger and more desperate for a NBA team than Northern California, which still has the Warriors. A move to Seattle would be wise and the city of Sacramento should let the Kings move on.
