Although Jason Terry left the Dallas Mavericks for greener pastures with the Boston Celtics, his ex-Mavericks teammates and owner coming to his defense after he was demoralized by LeBron James shows that the franchise still love Terry.
Everyone has seen the video of James smashing on a defenseless Terry is such a vicious fashion that you can’t but cringe. James even said dunking on Terry made it sweeter given their history from the 2011 NBA Finals (Terry lit James up for big shot after big shot on the way to a Mavericks championship).
But despite Terry signing with the Celtics last summer and even getting a Boston leprechaun tattoo, current members of the Mavericks have offered words of encouragement and praise for Terry.
Earlier this week from Mavericks outspoken owner Mark Cuban, “I think it’s the gutless who worry about what they look like in posters,” Cuban said. I give credit to [Terry]. You do your job and not care about the posters or the tweets. Those are the kind of guys that teams want.”
Even Dirk Nowitzki chimed in about Terry, who is scheduled to return to Dallas for the first time since signing with Boston: “He meant so much to our franchise,” Nowitzki said. “Not only on the court, where, to me, he’s one of the best clutch shooters I ever played with, but also off the court. He was a great community man. He’s just a guy with a huge heart. I wish him all the best this season, and hopefully he gets the ovation that he deserves.”
It says a lot about Terry’s character that former teammates still speak so highly of him so soon after parting with the franchise. Terry was a key member of the Mavericks for eight seasons, and the fact that his former teammates take the high road in regards to him is great to see.
