The New Orleans Hornets have had a really rough 2012-2013 NBA season. With just a 25-48 record, it feels pretty safe to describe this year for them as unsuccessful. Eric Gordon’s injury problems have persisted, Austin Rivers under-performed and then got injured, and most other players have been inconsistent. However, Anthony Davis has continued to be a cause for optimism this year.

In just his rookie season and at just 20 years old, Davis has shown that he has the chops to be a solid professional basketball player. In the 58 games that he’s played this season, he has averaged 13.3 points, 7.9 rebounds, 1.7 blocks and 1.1 steals per game while shooting 52.1 percent from the floor. He also has a Player Efficiency Rating of 21.58, which is the 18th best rating in the entire league.

His performance over his entire rookie season has been admirable and has undoubtedly justified him being the number one overall pick in last year’s draft. His overall numbers alone make that seem like the right decision and like he has potential to be a great player at this level.

However, what has been even more impressive about Davis’ performance this season is the fact that he’s continually improved. For instance, his numbers over the month of March are his best of the entire season. In the 13 games that he’s played in March, he has averaged 15.9 points, 9.7 rebounds, one steal and 1.6 blocks per game on 55.8 percent shooting from the field. That’s absolutely phenomenal and it shows that he’s been improving.

If Davis continues this trend for the rest of the season and into next year, it definitely won’t be long before he is an absolute star in this league. More importantly, it won’t be long before the Hornets won’t have to worry about having unsuccessful seasons. Davis, if he keeps improving, will change all of that.
