Nikola Pekovic: Injury Bug Bites Again For Minnesota Timberwolves’ Big Man

Kyle Terada-USA TODAY Sports

Stop me if you have heard this before. Minnesota Timberwolves starting center Nikola Pekovic is out tonight against the Memphis Grizzlies due to a sprained left ankle.

The sprain apparently occurred in last night’s home win over the Oklahoma City Thunder. The official news was just broken via the Minnesota Timberwolves Public Relations Twitter account.

As you have seen me say before, Pekovic is vital to the Wolves’ starting lineup, especially with fellow stud big man Kevin Love still out for an undisclosed amount of time. Since returning from an abdomen injury, Pekovic has been nearly unstoppable in the post over the past eight games. In fact, over his last three contests, he’s averaged over 19 points and 14 boards.

This story continues to keep going for the Wolves this year – injuries galore. Head coach Rick Adelman and company seem to never catch a break. After point guard Ricky Rubio returned from his major ACL injury in January, he has put up incredible numbers night in and night out for a guy who still is not 100% healthy. Paired with Pekovic over the last couple weeks, Minnesota has looked like a team with a bright future.

What will be interesting to find out is just how long the sprain keeps Pekovic out of the lineup, and if he plans on returning at all if it is indeed severe. With not a whole lot to play for in the remaining few games of the season, the Wolves may just ride out the season in hopes of getting their team healthy for the start of the 2013 campaign.
