Rudy Gay is now the featured player on the Toronto Raptors and the end of this year is about building things for next year. DeMar DeRozan added in 21 points as the Raptors defeated the Detroit Pistons 99-82.
“We’ve got a lot of young players and we’re playing for next year,” said Gay. “These young guys need to know what it feels like to win.”
The Pistons have been getting manhandled lately and it might come down to pride.
“The bottom line is, we have to get tired of getting embarrassed,” said Pistons coach Lawrence Frank. “At the end of the day, we’re all professionals and you have to be motivated by competition. That’s the deal. And to come into our building again and be embarrassed like we were; it hurts.”
Gay is clearly playing with pride lately; he says he was misused by his former team and now that he has a more refined role.
At halftime, the Raptors had a 46-45 edge, and they didn’t let up from there. Toronto has had a big week as their native, Andrew Wiggins, was named the Gatorade National High School Boys’ Basketball player of the year.
Gay’s comments might come off the wrong way if you think he means play worse for ping ping balls, but you get the sense he is talking more about the energy level players are giving. We’ll see how this develops.
