Jonas Jerebko’s future with the Detroit Pistons is definitely up in the air, but coach Lawrence Frank is encouraging Jerebko to play with more energy. Jerebko apparently took the advice Wednesday night when the Pistons lost 98-93 to the Boston Celtics.
Jerebko shot 6-of-10 from the floor and 2-of-3 from the 3-point area for 19 points. He also had five rebounds and three steals in addition to handling the ball well with just one turnover.
“Jonas just has to play with energy,” Frank told reporters after the game. “The points never really tell the story with Jonas’ game. Its just play with energy, effort, hustle plays. Make simple plays, it’s not like we’re gonna run a ton of plays for Jonas, but just make plays within the structure and just stay organized and disciplined.”
Jerebko came off the bench and played more than 27 minutes against the Celtics. It may have been his best game of the season, certainly in awhile.
The Pistons would like to get more consistency with Jerebko and see if they want to use him again next season. His numbers are down slightly, but his stock with the Pistons declined dramatically this NBA season. Two seasons ago as a rookie, he appeared in 80 games and started 73. This season, he has seen action in 43 games and started just two. He has averaged 17.4 minutes a game this season compared to almost 28.9 minutes two seasons ago.
A strong finish to this season might guarantee Jerebko a longer future with the Pistons. He just turned 22 years old and still has plenty of potential.
