The Washington Wizards have actually been one of the best teams in the NBA’s Eastern Conference over few months, despite their horrid start to the season and their reputations as cellar-dwellers in the league. However, over the past couple of weeks, their play has looked a lot more like it did at the beginning of the season when they had the worst record in the Association.
Washington is just 2-3 over their last five games, but their offense has been absolutely atrocious in that time. They haven’t been a great offensive team all season, averaging just 92.9 points per game on 43.3 shooting from the floor as a team. However, the way they’ve played over the past five games has been a new level of bad.
In their last five games, the Wizards have averaged just 89.8 points per game on just 38.5 percent shooting from the field. During the NBA teams’ last five games, both of those marks are the worst in the league. Moreover, the Wizards have shot only 32.6 percent at the three-point line, the eighth worst percentage in the league of the last five games.
There are plenty of factors that have contributed to these troubles on offense. The most notable is the injury troubles that Washington has been suffering through recently, with key players like Bradley Beal and Nene missing time. However, one of the surprising reasons that they’ve struggled has been John Wall.
Wall, who receives a ton of praise for his fantastic plays, has played incredibly inefficiently over the Wizards’ last five games. He’s averaged a great stat-line of 23.6 points, 7.6 assists and 6.4 rebounds per game, but has shot just 35.8 percent from the field and 28.6 percent from three. That’s definitely not the elite production that he was putting up just a few week ago.
The Wizards aren’t going to make the postseason this year, but they are still trying to see what they can develop into in the future. However, with all of these injuries that they are dealing with, it’s obvious that they need everybody at 100 percent health to see how they’re going to perform in the coming years. As they are now, with just half of their players healthy, this team in not good — especially on offense.
