Dallas Mavericks Mathematically Still Have Chance

Mathematically the Dallas Mavericks are still in the playoff picture. However, with six games to play they are sitting three games behind the Los Angeles Lakers for the final spot. In less than a week, Dallas went from a team that had everyone scared they were going to power into the playoffs to a team that now has some serious holes to fill before next season.

Trailing by 1.5 games in the standings, a blowout loss to the Lakers and a crushing last minute defeat to the Denver Nuggets has Dallas praying for a miracle. A miracle is about the only way they will be playing on April 21. Granted, we have seen crazier things happen. Last year in baseball the Texas Rangers blew a five game lead with nine games to play, so we can’t say they are completely out of it. However improbable it may seem, the truth remains the Mavericks still have a slim chance.

In order for that chance to happen, though, the Mavericks must take care of business and that starts tonight. They find themselves facing a Portland Trail Blazers team that has lost seven in a row. Dallas took care of business against the Sacramento Kings on Friday and they must do the same tonight in Portland. The other thing that must happen is they need to hope the Lakers and Utah Jazz start to lose and lose in a hurry. Either way, the Mavericks have a huge hill to climb to make the playoffs. They say it isn’t over until the fat lady sings. She isn’t singing right now, but she’s getting those vocal chords ready to start. Hopefully the Mavericks can shut her up for a little while longer.
