Is Cleveland Cavaliers Head Coach Byron Scott Going To Be Fired At Season's End?

Rumors are circulating about the job status of Cleveland Cavaliers head coach Byron Scott. At this time, there’s no official word from  team owner Dan Gilbert or GM Chris Grant. However, multiple sources are reporting that the team will move forward without Scott after the final game of the season is played.

Scott was definitely asked to do more with less. His team was very young and faced a seemingly insurmountable amount of injuries. That said, the talent they put on the court seemed to take a step backward in development when the new year started. After a .500 start, they where not even competitive in several of their losses.

What has been the red flag on this team is the lack of defensive improvement. Good defense is usually a feather in a coaches cap when it comes to the development of a young team. When the individual offensive skill set seems to be missing, you should be able to count on inspired defense under good coaching. When coaching is bad, lack of defense is usually a good sign of that as well.

There has also been criticism that points out a lack of any clear or defined team system on offense or defense. Basketball is an improvisational game, but to win in this league, the team has to have an identity and be on the same page. Nothing accomplishes that better than an implemented system. After their third straight qualifying season for the NBA lottery, there is still none in Cleveland.

Usually when this is the atmosphere on a team, the assumption is that the team has quit. However, when asked, the teams best player Kyrie Irving has made it clear that he “absolutely” wants Scott to return. That could be just the ‘right’ answer from Irving.

What else is he gonna say ? He’s not going to create awkwardness if Scott is retained, so I guess we’ll just have to wait and see.
