Brandan Wright Deserves Extension from Dallas Mavericks

Jerome Miron-USA TODAY Sports

After a couple of seasons as a key reserve and part-time starter for the Dallas Mavericks, hybrid center/forward Brandan Wright is approaching unrestricted free agency as a player that many teams will be pursuing. The Mavericks should move quickly and offer Wright a contract to keep him in Dallas for a few more seasons.

Wright averaged 6.9 points and 3.6 rebounds in 2011-2012, his first season with the Mavericks and followed it up by contributing 8.5 points and 4.1 rebounds this year, even starting 16 games. Wright proved his value late in the season, averaging 11.2 points and 5.7 rebounds in 24 minutes over the Mavericks final 23 games, with Dallas winning 15 of those games.

At 6’9″ and only 205 pounds, Brandan Wright isn’t the typical NBA center but that may be his biggest asset. Wright’s slender build allows him to move around the baseline for quick cuts and sneaky put backs, while also giving him a quickness advantage while running the floor. Wright may not have the bulk to defend the typical centers in the NBA, but he’s active enough to be effective in spurts.

Wright has played well enough to warrant a pay increase on the $992,680 salary he received for the 2012-2013 season. Dallas would be wise to offer Wright a contract somewhere in the range of $3-5 million per season for three seasons. The Mavericks have a ton of cap space this summer and with the free agency market for centers featuring Dwight Howard and Andrew Bynum, two of the best centers in the game but also both having baggage, Dallas would be well served to secure Wright’s services as a back up plan. He’s earned it.
