Myck Kabongo‘s collegiate career started off like any other. The Texas point guard averaged just under ten points per game in 2011-12 and although he could have made the decision to leave school after just one season — Kabongo returned to Austin. Prior to the start of the 2012-13 season however, Kabongo’s eligibility was put on hold while the NCAA investigated a trip he took from Cleveland Cavaliers forward and former Longhorn, Tristan Thompson. Kabongo was forced to miss roughly 3/4 of the season because of the investigation and with it — Texas’ expectations went out the window.
Kabongo’s 2012-13 season (or lack thereof) is now over with and to no real surprise, the 6-foot-2 point guard has made himself eligible for the 2013 NBA Draft. Kabongo has lightning quick speed and his play making ability is through the roof. The unfortunate circumstances within the past year have hurt Kabongo’s draft stock, but he should still hear his name called somewhere around the middle of the draft this upcoming June.
Strengths: Kabongo’s speed and ability to create and run an offense is exceptional. In the games that he did appear in later on in the year, Kabongo showed an improved scoring ability, finishing his stretch run by averaging 14.6 points per game. Kabongo is usually an under control point guard and has shown flashes of an up and coming mid-range game. He also knows how to play at different speeds and can get into the lane and create for others.
Weaknesses: Kabongo needs to put the NCAA investigation and unfortunate circumstances from this past season behind him. He needs to improve on his strength and work towards becoming a much more physical guard. Kabongo needs to show that he will be able to defend stronger guards at the NBA level. On the offensive end of the floor, Kabongo showed the ability to score the basketball late in the year, but he’s not really a true scorer.
