Boston Celtics Should Trade Rajon Rondo Under One Condition

Daniel Shirey-USA TODAY Sports

There are probably going to be a lot of changes happening with the Boston Celtics during this offseason. The team will have to see whether or not Kevin Garnett and Paul Pierce will come back, as both players are aging, and this leads to a very interesting quandary.

What should the team do with Rajon Rondo?

I think that answer lies in whether or not Garnett and Pierce return. If both of them retire, Boston should trade Rondo. That does sound extreme and would send Boston into a full rebuilding mode, but that would be the best thing for this team.

It is time to tear it down to the base and start over again. It has been a great run for the Celtics over the last decade, but there is a certain point where a team needs to start over. This would be one of those times if Garnett and Pierce decides to retire. I wouldn’t be trading Rondo if those two come back for the 2013-14 season.

It is a very fine line that needs to be walked here because the future of the team rests in the balance. You can either keep the band together or tear it apart and try with a new group. There was life still in the Celtics during their first-round playoff series so they may not be done yet, but the clock is ticking.

Rondo may not be back right away to start next season either, which makes this decision ever harder.
