Dallas Mavericks in Solid Spot to Land Chris Paul

JD Mercer-USA TODAY Sports

The Dallas Mavericks need to improve after going through a 41-41 season. Chris Paul will be an unrestricted free agent this offseason.

The match seems perfect in my opinion and while people may not like these rumors, it is going to continue until Paul decides where he wants to play. Paul can obviously get a ton more money from the Los Angeles Clippers but a number of factors may make him decide to move on to a team like the Mavericks.

There is likely going to be a coaching change this offseason with the Clippers after getting knocked out so suddenly in the playoffs. Is it possible that Phil Jackson could want to coach the Clippers so he can still be in Los Angeles? It could easily happen and that would change a lot of the decision making.

If that doesn’t happen though, I see Paul leaving town because of the way it ended with the Clippers. It was a definite beating that the team took in the last four games of that playoff series and Paul probably saw the cracks in the roster of the Clippers.

The Mavericks aren’t terribly better if you look at their record, but when you factor in a player like Dirk Nowitzki, it could make Paul consider the idea of Dallas.

The coaching decision will be the tipping point here though. I believe Paul is going to leave town and move on to the Mavericks in the end. I know fans of the Clippers won’t like hearing that but unless something changes drastically there, Dallas is the better stop. Paul could lead the Mavericks back to glory and possibly towards a championship within a year or two.
