There will be people throwing out all sorts of wacky rumors about where NBA free agents could end up this offseason. The Cleveland Cavaliers will be one of those teams that have those rumors about them going as well, and I think one rumor could have some value to it because of the future ramifications.
What would happen if Dwight Howard decided to go to Cleveland and the team was able to lure LeBron James back to town after next season?
Cleveland is a team that a lot of young talent led by point guard Kyrie Irving. Howard proved this season that he isn’t a big-city player because of a lack of accountability and maturity.
Cleveland is a big city, but it isn’t Los Angeles. If the Cavaliers could find a way to sign Howard to anchor the middle this offseason, it may prompt James to want to return to Cleveland because there would be better pieces in place.
It is a real long shot, obviously, but the Cavaliers should really think about this because if they can add some veterans to a team with Irving on it, who knows where Cleveland could go in the coming years. I wouldn’t be sleeping on the Cavaliers in the coming years because a few quality free agent pickups would turn things around in a very big way.
It may take a move like landing Howard though to begin the process moving in the right direction, which could in turn bring James back to Cleveland.
