Dan Gilbert Righting Wrongs of Summer 2010, Aims for Cleveland Cavaliers Redemption

The summer of 2010 doesn’t sound like it was the proudest time for Cleveland Cavaliers owner Dan Gilbert. He had just lost LeBron James via “The Decision”, sent out that redemption letter with the funny font and promised the Cavs would win a title before James’ Miami Heat, all now regrettable for obvious reasons.

Moving forward, however, Gilbert has a chance to make up for these aforementioned mistakes by admitting another one: The firing of Mike Brown that offseason in the hopes of getting King James to stick around.

“Yeah, it was a mistake. Sure it was a mistake,” Gilbert said, via ESPN. “We have the benefit of hindsight right now, and in hindsight it was a mistake. That summer we went through three years ago was a unique time for us as a franchise and the uncertainty on a lot of levels. We are very happy that we get to rectify any position we took back then. Maybe he’s meant to be here.”

There’s nothing Gilbert can do about Cleveland winning that NBA title before James, but perhaps he can get Cavs fans to forget about that painful summer by building around Kyrie Irving with a coach that deserved a better end the last time he was here. Sometimes righting wrongs is in the path to redemption.

But it’s also about moving forward and leaving the past in the past, and the Cavs can add a lot fresh young talent in the draft this year. Cleveland possesses the first and third picks in the second round along with the 19th in the first round. Most importantly, the Cavs will also pick somewhere between No. 3 and No. 6 overall based on the draft lottery, where a defensive guard like Otto Porter or Victor Oladipo would fit with Brown nicely.
