2013 NBA Draft: Boston Celtics Reportedly Interview Potential No. 1 Overall Pick Nerlens Noel

Jerry Lai-USA Today Sports

The Boston Celtics currently hold the No. 16 pick in the 2013 NBA Draft, so why would they want to interview Nerlens Noel?

That’s an interesting question, especially considering the fact that Noel has the potential to be taken with the No. 1 overall selection. In fact, Boston and Danny Ainge were one of six teams to actually interview the 6-foot-11 center on Thursday and ironically enough, the other five were indeed the top five projected organizations in this year’s draft.

Here’s the thing, Boston has zero chance of landing Noel without making a move and that very well could be Ainge’s plan. Let’s face facts, there has been tons of uncertainty surrounding the future of this Boston team and of course it starts with the upcoming discussions and decisions in regards to both Paul Pierce and Kevin Garnett. So, if Boston is planning on making a move, draft night could be the perfect time.

Maybe Boston just wanted to get a feel for Noel — in fact, he is a Massachusetts-native and he has been very vocal in saying that he was a fan of both Pierce and Garnett growing up.

On an unrelated note, Noel is currently targeting November or December in his recovery from a torn ACL that he suffered this past season. Reports have indicated that Noel is ahead of schedule on his rehab. However, he took a little heat at the combine for his weight.

In addition to Noel, the Celtics have also reportedly interviewed Victor Oladipo, Kelly Olynyk, Cody Zeller, Ryan Kelly, Glen Rice Jr., Mason Plumlee and Rudy Gobert.

It doesn’t take much to see that Ainge has been talking with a few players who have no chance of falling to No. 16 — is this an early indication that Boston will be moving up on draft night? Could be.
