Orlando Magic Needs Beno Udrich On Its 2013-14 Roster

Beno Udrih‘s future with the Orlando Magic seems somewhat safe, for now. The Magic are looking at a youth movement, but Udrih, who turns 32 this summer, can still give the balance to have a respectable team on the court every night. It’s not entirely feasible to have a roster full of NBA rookies.

If the Magic are thinking of dumping Udrih to continue their emphasis on youth movements, they could be making a mistake. He came to Orlando from the Milwaukee Bucks and was in a Magic uniform for 27 games. He made the most of more minutes. If the Magic increases his minutes next year, he’d likely continue to play good basketball.

In 39 games with Milwaukee, Udrih averaged 6.7 points, 3.5 assists 2.0 rebounds and 18.4 minutes. The Magic upped Udrih’s minutes to 27.3 per game in the 27 contests in which he saw action. He shot 40.8 percent from the floor with the Magic compared to 47.5 percent for the Bucks. But his free-throw shooting clip, which was 72.7 at Milwaukee, rose to 85.7 at Orlando.

Udrih drew attention from the Magic coaches the last game of the regular season at the Miami Heat. He played 36 minutes and was 5-of-8 from the floor, 1-of-2 in threes and 2-of-4 in free throws. He had an incredible 14 assists. That stat alone, against Miami, should guarantee Udrich a roster spot next season.

Udrih should be able to blend in the youth-oriented lineups very nicely. He will complement a youth movement, not hurt it.

The Magic should plan on keeping him. They won’t regret it and neither will Udrih
