Boston Celtics Rumors: Greg Oden Will Continue To Be An Off-Season Target

Craig Mitchelldyer-USA Today Sports

Free agent center Greg Oden has not suited up within the NBA ranks since the 2009-10 season — that’s right it’s been a full three years now.

After being selected as the No. 1 overall pick back in 2007, Oden has seen his career and potential be completely dismantled by injuries. He missed his entire rookie season before playing in 82 combined games for the Portland Trailblazers from 2008-10. However, according to recent reports, Oden continues to work out and has even been labeled as looking, “unbelievable.”

NBA fans will obviously wait to jump to conclusions regarding Oden and a potential return, but one team has continuously been linked to the 7-footer. It’s the Boston Celtics.

Rumors like this one will be aplenty this off-season for the Celtics who could potentially be entering a major transition period as they continue to contemplate decisions regarding veteran Hall of Famers Kevin Garnett and Paul Pierce. It’s no secret that the Celtics need front court help and although a former No. 1 overall pick who has only appeared in 82 total games since 2007 may not be the direct answer that Boston fans are hoping for, it’s still a viable option.

Let’s be serious — what would Boston have to lose by taking a chance on Oden? And in all honesty, what if Deshaun Thomas is right in his quotes about Oden’s workouts? Remember, he was chosen over Kevin Durant back in 2007. Oddly enough, that 2007 NBA Draft was the same night in which Boston began its construction of the original “Big Three” by acquiring Ray Allen and then eventually Garnett.

Oden will be monitored moving forward and rightfully so.
