2013 NBA Draft: Washington Wizards in Great Position With Third Pick

Debby Wong-USA TODAY Sports

The Washington Wizards have to be one of the happiest teams in the NBA after securing the third pick in the draft after Tuesday’s draft lottery. It will allow the Wizards to pick up another great player to put alongside John Wall and Bradley Beal.

There are many ways that this could go for Washington and a lot of players that would look great in a Wizards uniform next season.

Washington was an awful outside shooting team, so there will be talk that the team will take hometown guy Otto Porter, Jr., which would give the Wizards three solid young players. There is also the possibility that the Wizards want to go with a big man like Anthony Bennett or Alex Len. Those two, however, have injury problems facing them, and who knows who effective they will be to start next season.

It is a great situation for the Wizards to be in though, because they will likely get their pick of any player not named Nerlens Noel … probably.

Would anyone be surprised if the Cleveland Cavaliers decided to try to move back to get Porter for themselves? It could open the door for Noel to end up in a Washington jersey. It isn’t likely, but it is something worth considering if Noel isn’t ready to go until December because of his recovery from an ACL tear. The easy choice would be to just take Porter with the third pick and let the team have a core of outside shooters.

The Wizards do need inside help though, and may be tempted to look at other players. It is a great problem to have for Washington over the next month, and too many different ways to go with this.
