2013 NBA Draft: What Should the Cleveland Cavaliers Do With No. 1 Overall Pick?

David Richard-USA Today Sports

The Cleveland Cavaliers won the 2013 NBA Draft Lottery on Tuesday night, effectively earning the rights to the No. 1 overall selection. Now however, the Cavs must decide what to do with the pick.

Should Cleveland trade the pick and hope for a better return? Or do the Cavaliers have a prospect like Nerlens Noel in their sights?

Let’s first start with the idea that Cleveland keeps the No. 1 overall pick. Well, at this point it appears like there would be one heavy favorite and one dark horse that the Cavaliers could target. Ben McLemore seems outside the equation at this point, so that leaves Noel and potentially Otto Porter Jr.

Noel would be the obvious selection — a 6-foot-11 center with potential and the ability to anchor a front court with his defensive presence. Porter on the other hand, is an ideal fit and he could give the Cavaliers a young, but talented back court along side Kyrie Irving and Dion Waiters.

Here’s the issue at hand though, neither Noel nor Porter are instant impact players that you can build a franchise around. So, is this really the value that Cleveland wants at No. 1? What if they could get more for their quality by trading the pick?

The Cavaliers have four picks in this year’s NBA Draft and that’s more enough selections to add to their foundation or make a move that could better than chances of being more competitive next season.

Cleveland needs to take the next month and being assertive, garner options and weigh any potential trades that could come through. If the deal is not right, play it safe and take Noel. The Cavaliers have leverage here, they need to make sure that they can make the most out of it.
