2013 NBA Draft: Orlando Magic Should Draft Nerlens Noel If He's Available

Teams like the Orlando Magic will have to do their homework and carefully study the value of University of Kentucky center Nerlens Noel, especially being two months away from having torn the ACL in his knee.

It’s considered he’d be automatic No. 1 in the June 27th NBA Draft if it weren’t for the knee situation. He’s not likely to be ready for NBA training camps in October.

But it will be interesting to see how many teams would pass him up for that reason. Once he’s healthy, Noel can be a dominating player, more dominating that some of the other top picks being mentioned.

The Magic need a healthy Noel in their lineup. They need a strong presence inside. They already have material for the perimeter spot and can utilize the current young players they have. Ben McLemore, Trey Burke and Victor Oladipo are perimeter players that are considered No. 1 player material. But unless the Magic and other teams are told Noel would be a risk because of the knee, they should not hesitate to take him.

The NBA has evolved into such a sport dependent on superior defensive player that one would wonder why not get the best defensive talent available. Noel provides talent the Magic can use inside, which players like McLemore, Burke and Oladipo would be hard-pressed to provide. Remember Dwight Howard? This is not to compare Noel to Howard but someone needs to bring back that inside presence to the Orlando attack.

If Noel is available, the Magic should take him. The only excuse for not having Noel on the roster is if the Cleveland Cavaliers, who have the No. 1 pick, choose him first.
