2013 NBA Draft: Cleveland Cavaliers Shouldn't Trade No. 1 Pick

The 2013 NBA Draft is just a month away, and there are reports that the Cleveland Cavaliers are considering the idea of trading the No. 1 pick. While Cleveland could use all the help they can get, the idea of trading the pick is absolutely ridiculous and the Cavaliers shouldn’t even consider it. There are two ways that Cleveland should go that don’t involve making that trade.

The smartest thing to do would be to just draft Nerlens Noel to become the building block inside. He will be out to start next season because of his ACL recovery, but Cleveland has the bodies inside to allow Noel to rest up for a month or two. He is the best center in this draft and will be a dominating player once he gets fully healthy. The second thing that the Cavaliers could do is to draft Otto Porter, Jr. with that top pick. The team needs a small forward and Porter fits that role, but I see a single problem with that. If the Cavaliers are going to seriously consider the thought of bringing LeBron James back to town after next season, you can’t have Porter in his position.

Cleveland should feel very lucky that they have this pick and use it wisely. They already have Kyrie Irving and Dion Waiters on the roster, and if they could add someone like Noel to that mix, it may make the Cavaliers a destination for players to go in free agency. The worst thing that can happen at this point in time for Cleveland is to go out and make a trade to lose that top pick that doesn’t work out.
