2013 NBA Draft: New Orleans Pelicans Should Try to Trade Up

Derick E. Hingle-USA TODAY Sports

The New Orleans Pelicans are in a very interesting position with the 2013 NBA Draft coming up at the end of June. The Pelicans have the no. 6 pick and with so many different holes to fill, you would think that the Pelicans should be considering the idea of possibly moving down in the draft. However, I think that the team needs to move up to the no. 2 or no. 3 pick to secure a player like Ben McLemore or Otto Porter, Jr.

New Orleans has a roster full of guards right now including Eric Gordon, who has made it clear in the past that he doesn’t want to be there. I would use Gordon as the main piece for a deal with a team like the Orlando Magic. If the Pelicans can package Gordon and that sixth pick for Orlando’s second pick and another first-round pick next year, I think a deal can be done. I see McLemore and Porter, Jr. being difference makers in the NBA beginning next season and you want one of them on your team.

The Pelicans have their point guard and power forward positions taken care of with Austin Rivers and Anthony Davis. They still have a solid center in Robin Lopez, and they have Ryan Anderson coming off the bench. The missing piece is a small forward or shooting guard if they trade Gordon. Orlando needs a lot of help themselves and adding a proven player like Gordon may persuade them to trade that no. 2 pick away. It is just a suggestion, but it is one that the Pelicans need to seriously think about before the draft arrives.
