Memphis Grizzlies Need To Keep Lionel Hollins

The Memphis Grizzlies made a remarkable run in the 2013 NBA playoffs before running into the buzzsaw known as the San Antonio Spurs, getting swept in the Western Conference Finals. Memphis may be forced to make several moves in the offseason and one of those moves might be with their head coach. Lionel Hollins is a hot candidate for many different teams who are looking for a new coach. The Grizzlies need to find a way to get him under contract right now to avoid having Hollins leave town.

Hollins wants to remain in Memphis and the team has won the sixth-most games in the NBA over the last three seasons under him, but the Grizzlies made a big error. Hollins isn’t under contract for next season; his deal expires at the end of June. Memphis should have locked Hollins in before this even became a possibility. They are now going to have to fight with teams like the Los Angeles Clippers, who have the big money and the assets to make him a very happy man in the big city.

The Clippers have been mentioned as asking for permission to talk to Hollins before his contract expires; I don’t see Memphis allowing that. They should use the next month to figure out how to keep Hollins around. I don’t think the Grizzlies would be the same team without him as their coach. There will be a lot of different conversations happening over the next 30 days. We will now play the waiting game to see where Hollins is coaching when next season starts.
