Should Phoenix Suns Trade Marcin Gortat Before 2013 NBA Draft?

Should Phoenix Suns Trade Marcin Gortat Before 2013 NBA Draft

The Phoenix Suns must make some exceptional moves in the offseason in order to improve on their horrendous 25-57 record, which was the worst in the Western Conference during the 2013 NBA season. One of those moves could be trading center Marcin Gortat for some draft picks.

The Suns need to take advantage of every possible scenario thrown at them this offseason. That also means creating possibilities that may not currently be there. It is no secret that Gortat was on the trade block towards the deadline, which means it would not be a surprise if Phoenix dealt him during the 2013 NBA Draft.

Even though Gortat is an outstanding defensive center, the Suns need to stack up on draft picks in order to improve their chances of success in the future. The deal the organization should be looking for is one or two draft picks plus a young backup center for Gortat. Also, the teams that need to be targeted are possible contenders for next season that do not have a good defensive asset around the basket.

With two first round and one second round draft picks already, the Suns are ready to drastically improve the team in one swoop. Obviously, adding one or two more picks would increase these odds immensely, which would give Phoenix a good chance to land at least one star player.

Gortat can move quickly up and down the court, and even though he is not a top-notch scorer, he can hit shots away from the basket. More importantly, he is a solid rebound and an even better blocker.

The 29-year-old averaged 11.1 points, 8.5 rebounds, 1.2 assists, 1.6 blocks and 30.8 minutes per game. He also converted a season-low 52.1 percent of his 9.3 shot attempts in 61 starts.
