Memphis Grizzlies Can’t Let Lionel Hollins Get Away
2013 was a very successful season for the Memphis Grizzlies even though they were swept in the Western Conference Finals.
The story with the team now revolves around their coaching situation. Lionel Hollins will have his contract expire at the end of the month and other teams have been asking about him. There is also the matter of George Karl being available and the team being interested in making him the coach.
This is very simple to me. Memphis must keep Hollins in town.
There is no reason at all to change coaches right now. The Grizzlies just made it to within one series of playing for a championship and while they didn’t win a game in that series, they shouldn’t get rid of their coach. Karl is only available because of the uncertainty around the Denver Nuggets now that they are looking for a new general manager. There has been talk that Karl and Hollins could end up swapping jobs with Hollins going to Denver and Karl landing in Memphis.
Karl is a great coach, but has only got past the first round once in the last nine years. Hollins is a rising star around the NBA. The nucleus is there with Zach Randolph, Marc Gasol and Mike Conley. Memphis would be silly to break this up now. They should re-sign Hollins and bring in a free agent to help out on the scoring end. It appears that talks have gotten quiet between the team and Hollins right now, so he could leave town, but Memphis will regret it in a huge way if Hollins gets away.
