Should Brooklyn Nets Continue to Pursue Brian Shaw?
There is no question Indiana Pacers associate head coach Brian Shaw will be a NBA head coach next season. There are simply too many teams interested in him, and he has had too much success as an assistant. The only question is who will be the lucky team to land him. Shaw reportedly has his eyes set on either the Denver Nuggets or Los Angeles Clippers, but apparently, the Brooklyn Nets are determined to hire Shaw to take them to the next level.
Shaw was an assistant for the Los Angeles Lakers under Phil Jackson for many years. He then took the job with the Pacers where he has helped mold a team into a legitimate contender. No one believed Indiana could take the Miami Heat to seven games in the Eastern Conference Finals. However, Shaw got lot of the credit for the Pacers performing at a high level, which is why so many teams are pursuing him.
“He is a really good head coach waiting to happen,” Pacers executive Donnie Walsh said, according to the New York Post. “He has the player experience but he has spent his time as an assistant with a lot of good coaches, particularly Phil Jackson. Now he’s been through the situation with us.”
Shaw would be a perfect fit for Brooklyn because the organization wants someone who is confident in his ability to lead established players. Shaw has been a part of some great teams with some outstanding basketball players. He knows how to coach the right way by getting the most out of very talented athletes.
“He’s got a special way that he presents things to players where they have a lot of confidence in what he tells them,” Walsh told the New York Post. “He’s firm without yelling and screaming. If they screw up, you’ll see him get right up at the timeout, go right to them, grab them aside and tell them: ‘You can’t do that.’ But he does it the right way.
“He’s got the knowledge, the presence required for a head coach and he’s got the demeanor to do it.”
At this point, if the Nets want to lure him away from the other suitors they will have to give Shaw a solid contract and convince him that the team has what it takes to go the distance. In fact, Brooklyn must pull out all of the stops to land Shaw because there is no question he is one of the biggest catches on the market.
